Pro and Cons Essay Topics
Pro and Cons Essay TopicsIn this article I will discuss how to approach the writing of a pro and cons essay. Students, either undergraduate or graduate, are required to write these types of essays in their composition courses. I will also discuss some pros and cons of each topic.Pros: Writing a pro and cons essay requires you to be more open minded and analytical than if you were to just do a rehash of a topic that you read about in a textbook. You must evaluate both sides of the argument, but not merely present your opinion as to which topic is better. You must be able to read and interpret the information presented, but also come to a conclusion. You must take into consideration the fact that both sides of the argument should be addressed.Cons: While writing a pro and con's essay, it can become quite tedious to have to write each and every time you come across a single point on either side of the debate. You must, therefore, be ready to spend a lot of time on such an assignment. It is even possible that your points may be dismissed as 'trivial' by the other party and therefore being labeled as a trivial point. This is a definite disadvantage. If this happens, it is best to start fresh.Furthermore, I find the fact that I am forced to write on a specific topic to be a waste of time and resources. It makes me feel like I am just reading information and not really engaging with the material. On the other hand, if you are trying to get a college degree, such a wasted effort could result in you not getting a degree, unless you are able to somehow convince the teacher that your thesis is important, and the information in the essay is not trivial.Pro and con topics tend to focus on factual information and important points that are not trivial. I remember doing a research paper one time, and having to write a similar pro and con essay. I found that I learned more about how things work, and my ideas changed, if I was able to point out any flaws in their argument. There fore, if I did not directly address the issue, I would at least be able to state that a flaw was present.Cons tend to talk about free choice. It can be a struggle for a student to accurately express their opinion on free choice, because there are many different people who believe different things on this topic.Pros and cons are fairly simple to grasp. The only thing is that most students do not really understand how they are to do this. They simply believe that they are supposed to offer an opinion, and then explain why they believe that it is wrong. Sometimes it can seem complicated when you are faced with two opposing points of view.Of course, a good persuasive essay is not a simple process. However, if you follow the guidelines, you will be well on your way to a winning argument in a class or an essay that is truly interesting and worthwhile.
